Vigtory, when Fubo acquired it, was essentially a sports-betting app built on third-party tech provided by the European company Amelco, according to several of the ex-Fubo employees and two industry sources who didn't work there but had knowledge of the company. It would take work to mold it into the bespoke sports-betting app that Gandler had initially envisioned.

More than that, no company had yet succeeded in building a sports-betting experience that could be integrated seamlessly with TV, allowing people to bet in tandem with the action on screen without time delays from latency. Butera and Rattner raced to build out the new division. The product team rushed to create the app.

Several former employees said that higher-ups at Fubo repeatedly pushed for tight deadlines — deadlines the second former staffer called "ridiculous. As such, Fubo's product roadmap kept getting pushed. A third former employee said the gaming division was "sprinting" toward a late August sportsbook launch, which then got pushed to September, and then October.

The Fubo Sportsbook ultimately launched in November in Iowa and a month later in Arizona. A fourth former staffer described the app as "good," while two others said the app still had a lot of bugs at launch. The second former staffer said that bugs should be expected of any new product, but added: "It wasn't that it was bad tech, it's just that it didn't have all the capabilities that we needed in order to launch an optimized product.

Meanwhile, Gandler was nowhere to be seen by the rank-and-file, former staffers said. The third former gaming staffer estimated that the CEO came to the Chicago office once between and , and a fifth ex-employee said Gandler rarely acknowledged the gaming division, "unless it was some cliche on a call.

For an initiative that was supposed to be a pillar of the Fubo's future, Gandler didn't appear to be very hands on. Still, management continued to sell to investors on their growing TV-subscriber base, which they planned to convert into sportsbook users.

FuboTV projected it would have around , to , subscribers by the end of It smashed that target, hitting over 1.

But three of the former staffers said there wasn't much conversation internally about cross-promoting the sportsbook to those subscribers, as some staffers had hoped.

When the sportsbook launched in Iowa and Arizona, the third former gaming staffer said they didn't see a mention of it on FuboTV's website or apps. The first former gaming staffer added: "There was no conversation about how to turn over users from the TV side to the book.

Only about half of FuboTV subscribers were in states where sports gambling was legal, according to multiple former employees. And that number was cut even further because Fubo would still need to invest millions more to gain market access where sports betting is legal, since that form of gambling is regulated at the state level.

Without a firehose of new customers from the TV platform, much of the Fubo Sportsbook's marketing strategy focused on paid and affiliate marketing, as well as local advertising, including pop-ups at sporting events to sign up customers, according to several former gaming staffers.

But, launching in fall during the height of the US sports-betting explosion, Fubo was outflanked by larger operators like Caesars Entertainment that poured hundreds of millions into marketing their sports-betting businesses in Several sports-betting companies, including Caesars Entertainment, Wynn, and Bally's, pulled back on marketing spending in , as stocks like DraftKings got hammered in the public markets and investors turned their attention from aggressive growth to profitability.

Around that time, the company began rebuilding its sportsbook in an effort to solve rampant tech issues, an endeavor that would take several months. Users on social media had been complaining that the app would freeze , that they were unable to apply to promotions, and that it was not easy to withdraw funds from the app.

The second industry source close to Fubo said the tech issues were causing "run-of-the-mill glitches that frankly for a new bettor is really anathema.

But in an increasingly competitive streaming space, FuboTV has decided to exit online sports betting, the company added in its statement. Despite fielding interest for the sports betting assets, FuboTV said it saw no potential partners come forward to help reduce upfront launch costs and see its way to profitability for shareholders by integrating its streaming TV offering with sports betting.
